When thinking of autumn in Germany, an image of continuous rain often comes to mind. However, for Berlin, this is not entirely accurate. Statistically, October is often one of the drier autumn months. Understanding the typical rain patterns helps you not to cancel your outdoor plans unnecessarily. Rain in Berlin's October rarely falls as a continuous, grey drizzle for hours on end. Much more common are short, often intense showers brought by fast-moving cloud bands. In between, there are often long dry and even sunny periods. A day with a 50% chance of rain might mean it only rains for 20 minutes in the afternoon.
Because of these short showers, a small, compact pocket umbrella is the ideal companion for October. It fits in any bag and saves you from the brief downpour. A heavy, thick raincoat is often not necessary and too warm during the sunny intervals.
A special treat in autumn is the time right after a shower. The air is washed clean and incredibly clear. The scent of damp leaves fills the parks (this smell is called "petrichor"). The wet streets reflect the autumn light, creating beautiful photo opportunities. Instead of fearing the rain, one can look forward to the special atmosphere that follows.
