Tips 101: Going Solo to Tokyo http://tripess.com/tips-101-going-solo-to-tokyo/ http://tripess.com/tips-101-going-solo-to-tokyo/#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2017 14:50:12 +0000 http://tripess.com/?p=253 Japan, is a beautiful country with an estimated population of around 127 million. And Tokyo as Japan’s capital is one of the most populated urban areas in the world. With a population as big as this, you may wonder if you have thrown yourself into the deep end. But there is nothing to worry about because Japan is a very tourist-friendly country, most especially for solo travelers. And to make the most of the time for your visit here is a rundown of the top tips when going solo in Tokyo:

CHECK IF YOUR AIRLINE FLIES TO HANEDA AIRPORT

When flying to Tokyo, you will either arrive at Haneda Airport which handles most of the domestic flights or at Narita International Airport which handles the vast majority of the international flights. Both of these airports are world-class, offering great services and on-time performances. However, Narita is located further away from central Tokyo while Haneda is just 14-km away. So if you want to travel less and save more going to Tokyo, check if your airline flies to Haneda Airport.

From Narita, there are several options for getting into the central Tokyo including public transportations such as train, bus, and taxi. However, these options can be expensive, ranging from 900 yen-20000 yen.

Haneda’s transportation options, however, are much cheaper ranging from 410 yen-11000 yen. Aside from transportations, the airport also offers a hotel in each of its three terminals. Hotels accessible by free shuttle buses from the airport are also available.

LEARN ENOUGH OF THE LANGUAGE AND KEEP SOMETHING ON HAND TO TRANSLATE EASILY WHEN NEEDED.

This is a general rule when traveling anywhere, whether you’re a solo traveler or not. Language can be a barrier especially in countries like Japan where many of the signs are written only in kanji, a Japanese writing using characters only instead of letters. Having a book, or something that is not reliant on battery power, with the common phrases and words translated will help you a lot most especially for the longer journeys.

PLAN FOR YOUR NEXT DESTINATION.

As a solo traveler, you have to rely on your own knowledge to figure everything out. Going out and exploring without a plan is like throwing yourself to the lions. Tokyo is a big and populated urban area and can be really overwhelming. Research and read a lot about the city’s public transportation, if needed buy a map or use Google Maps, and list down the destinations you want to visit. Doing this, it cuts down stress on traveling and gives you more time to explore other places.

BUY A JAPAN RAIL PASS (JR PASS).

Since most of your travel will require you to get in train, subway, and bus, and of course, you don’t want to miss the chance, buy a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass). This pass is only available to tourists and for a flat price, you can travel by train, subway, and bus without the hassle of buying tickets in every ride. You can save some money too!

Transport in Tokyo is easy to navigate. You can either download the Tokyo metro app to your phone or get one of the paper maps available in most main stations. All station signs and announcements are in Japanese and English so you won’t have a hard time getting from destination to destination.

BRING ACTIVITIES FOR THE TRAIN RIDE.

Japanese are not chatty especially when in trains and subways. Most of the time, everyone is busy reading, hooked on their mobile phones, or just minding their own business even when they have travel companions. And it is very rare that you find someone to talk to because talking on transit is usually frowned upon in Japanese culture. It is advisable that you bring something of an activity with you, most especially if you are one of the people who get bored easily. Reading a book, writing in your journal, or playing games on your mobile phone (use your earphones or keep the volume down so you won’t distract other passengers) are few of the options you can do.

PAY ATTENTION TO RECOMMENDATIONS AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES TO GET THEM.

In anywhere you might be traveling, people (the locals or the native vacationers) will frequently offer recommendations. And if you do find people to direct you, take extra advantage of the opportunity to ask for the options for how best you can utilize your short time of stay. Sometimes, it is better not to just rely on your own list of top spots. Tokyo has a lot of friendly people, you will surely find one who can help you.

FOCUS ON THE MAIN AREAS AND DO NOT JUMP AROUND TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CITY.

Explore places in the neighborhood and avoid spending most of your day traveling from one place to another. This won’t only save your time but also your money. There are a lot of beautiful spots and sceneries in Tokyo and you will surely not get disappointed.

BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS WHEN GOING OUT AT NIGHT TIME.

Exploring Tokyo in the evening with all the lively and fascinating city lights is truly a must-see. But being a solo traveler that you are, and getting around a place you aren’t familiar with, it is most advisable to take extra care of yourself. This does not mean that Tokyo is not a safe place, but every city has its bad guys.

Confidence is key. When going home or going out in the evening, make sure you can navigate without so much looking at your map or your phone so you won’t make yourself a target.

REST.

Getting around Tokyo and maximizing your time visiting the different destinations can be really exhausting. So when you get back to your hostel, rest, relax, sleep, and prepare for another day of Japan adventure.

Have Beer, Will Travel http://tripess.com/have-beer-will-travel/ http://tripess.com/have-beer-will-travel/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2017 09:42:43 +0000 http://tripess.com/?p=249 By Dan Blacharski

We travel to see museums, mountains, and mystical wonders, but there’s one thing that always makes for a good vacation, and that’s beer. The craft beer movement has created some astounding local and regional tastes that are a world apart from the lawnmower lager you enjoy on a Sunday afternoon at home, and some microbreweries have become destinations in and of themselves.

Want to see mummies? Feh. What’s more interesting is the fact that beer was one of the most important parts of life in ancient Egypt, and was considered to be a gift from the gods. Accordingly, one should always have a beer prior to viewing any museum’s Egyptian exhibit. Now that’s good history!

A vacation to destinations with great pubs, microbreweries and beer festivals may just be one of the best trips you’ve ever taken. Here are a few great destinations where beer can play a big part in your itinerary:

There’s More Beer in Denver

You may have checked hiking the Appalachian Trail off your list, but you haven’t seen anything yet until you’ve hiked the Denver Beer Trail. Showcasing 27 of Denver’s local craft breweries, get started by downloading the trail map or picking one up at the Denver Tourist Information Center at 1575 California Street. The guide tells you what makes each brewery unique, suggests a signature beer from each brewery, and includes room for your own tasting notes and a “been there” box to check off.

If you have a hard time choosing which of the 27 breweries on the trail map to visit, your challenge will be even greater when you realize that there are many more not on the guide, and Denver has more than 60 breweries, more than 100 breweries in the metro area, and more than 300 throughout the state. You thought Milwaukee was beer city? Not even close. Denver brews more beer than any other American city! Travel and Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, and USA Today have all selected Denver as the number one Microbrew Beer City in the country.

Like beer festivals? One of the biggest festivals in the country – the Great American Beer Festival – is held every fall in Denver. Known as the “Super Bowl” of craft beer, the GABF is recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest beer celebration on the planet. If you had a hard time deciding which beers to sample from the 27 breweries on the Trail Map, then you’re in for a surprise at GABF, where there are about 6,700 different beers available for tasting.

Shenandoah Valley, Virginia: Beautiful scenery, and beer, too!

The Blue Ridge Mountains is a perfect summertime getaway, with some of the most spectacular scenery and expansive parks in the country. It’s almost as beautiful as a nice IPA in a frosted beer mug.

Fortunately, the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail is part of the experience. The Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail isn’t like the other big-city beer trails. The views are spectacular, and the trail pairs the craft beer experience with outdoor recreation, music festivals, and very cool small towns. Thirteen breweries are on the trail, all within an easy drive of one another. It’s a great way to enjoy your vacation, after taking in the scenery, hiking, paddling, or cycling through what is one of the most celebrated natural locations in the country.

You’ll find plenty of summertime beer-themed festivals in the area as well, including the Shenandoah Valley Blues & Brews Festival. And of course, with great beer comes great food, and the locavore culture makes for some great farm-to-table dining destinations.

Drinking beer in California’s wine country

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco, may be best known for its excellent wineries, but if you’re looking for great microbreweries, you’ve hit the jackpot. It’s not just wine country. It’s the home of the award-winning Pliny the Elder double India pale ale from Russian River Brewing Company in downtown Santa Rosa, which is brewed in limited batches. Russian River’s brews are considered to be some of the best in California. Sonoma County is fast becoming known for its artisan beverages, with over 30 craft breweries, brew pubs and tap rooms throughout the county, visitors have plenty of alternatives to the traditional wine destinations. Naturally, there is a map available for planning your itinerary.

You bet, there’s good beer in Reno, Nevada

Northern Nevada has a lot more going for it than its casinos, and the region boasts a thriving craft beer scene. Nevada’s oldest brewery, Great Basin Brewing Co., was featured in Forbes recently for its “Icky” beer, not named because of the taste of course, but because of the brewery’s role in transporting a large ichthyosaur fossil from a remote Nevada location to the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles County.

Reno/Tahoe offers nearly two dozen craft breweries. In addition to Great Basin, you can also find award-winning brewers Brasserie St. James, which was named “Mid-Size Brewpub of the Year” at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival.

Sometimes the place you drink your beer is just as great an experience as the beer itself, and the Depot Craft Brewery & Distillery, housed in an historic 1910 railway headquarters, is the first combined brewery and distillery in Nevada – and they have a great weekend brunch!

Surf to California’s central coast for some cold suds

California’s central coast offers some of the most spectacular coastlines in the West, and the region remains the California dream of every Midwestern teenager in the country. Along those beautiful hillsides in San Luis Obispo, you may come across Libertine Brewing Company, one of the few breweries which incorporates local and wild yeast strains in their brews. It’s definitely worth stopping in before you head out to the beach with your surfboard, just to experience the wild ales, and see what it’s really like to enjoy a beer which incorporates local ingredients. Libertine also uses heated lava rocks to cook the wort, uses open top coolships, and ages its beer in oak vessels along with local fruits. The brewery’s beer and wine bar includes a full restaurant with vinyl records played on a turntable and electic art on the walls.

Short Term Apartments Can Be An Ideal Solution For Any Traveler http://tripess.com/short-term-apartments-can-be-an-ideal-solution-for-any-traveler/ http://tripess.com/short-term-apartments-can-be-an-ideal-solution-for-any-traveler/#respond Tue, 11 Jul 2017 12:57:44 +0000 http://tripess.com/?p=246 Lodging can be hard to find. This is particularly true in big cities such as London. In many instances, people are only looking for short-term places to stay as they engage in a business venture or go to school. Finding a solution to this issue can be tough. The visitor may find a hotel stay far too expensive as well as not offering them enough space to conduct business or invite friends over for a party. A hotel may also fail to provide cooking facilities, forcing the occupant to spend more money on eating eat and not allowing them other dining options.

A Short Term Stay

Luckily, there is a solution for all those who want better possible lodging options in many parts of the world. A few companies such as Clarendon on LinkedIn have developed useful ways to make any longer term stay much easier. Even in big cities, travelers will find that they can have the kind of amenities they want at a price they can afford. Better yet, many such places offer larger rooms that can accommodate multiple family members and make a trip to any large city even more enjoyable. This is why so many people have been pleased to discover there are alternatives that can truly work for any situation they have in mind. A short-term stay is one that can be fun but it can also be taxing. Many travelers want to have a space that feels like home and welcomes them inside the second they start their stay there.

Ease of Use

Staying in a longer stay apartment makes life much easier for travelers. Traveling can be very stressful. Anyone who travels may feel the need to retreat from the world after a long day of meetings or even time spent seeing the local sights. In that case, it is helpful to have a space where they can find relaxation and time with colleagues and family. A longer term stay facility is one that makes this process far less difficult. Such facilities typically offer specific amenities such as multiple rooms rather than a single room as well as access to gyms where people can work out when they are on the road.

Updated Spaces

Another advantage of staying an apartment is that such spaces are typically updated very frequently. This means that each traveler can stay at a place that is appealing to all the senses. Many such places have luxuries of all kinds. A traveler can expect to find room service that makes sure the space is clean and comfortable. They can also expect to find items like coffee makers and full-sized refrigerators that make it easy to eat healthy even when on the road. Such apartments also have security that makes it easy to relax as residents know they are protected inside at all hours of the day. In short, a stay at a short-term apartment can solve many kinds of problems that travelers of all kinds may face.

Good reasons to travel alone at least once http://tripess.com/good-reasons-to-travel-alone-at-least-once/ http://tripess.com/good-reasons-to-travel-alone-at-least-once/#respond Wed, 28 Jun 2017 12:30:42 +0000 http://tripess.com/?p=242

Traveling alone becomes more and more popular. Want to find out why? We’ve prepared a list of convincing reasons why you should travel alone at least once:

#1. Planning becomes much simpler

Sometimes it’s difficult to schedule an appointment to the fashion hair salon, to say nothing of a serious trip. You can face many problems when trying to plan a trip with other people since everybody is busy with their life! If you travel alone, though, you don’t have to match somebody’s schedule.

#2. You’ll become more confident

Traveling means that you step out of your comfort zone and might face different challenges. You will have to make serious decisions on your own and be responsible for them. After going through various difficulties, you will boost your self-esteem and feel more confident.

#3. Enjoy being egoistic

Just imagine – you get a total freedom and can do whatever you want! Want to sleep till the noon and skip that boring excursion? Go ahead! Want to do a few things from your bucket list? Do them now! You don’t have to sacrifice your dreams or pretend like you’re really interested in some exhibition.

#4. You actually meet new people

If you travel with the group of people, you’re less likely to make new friends and communicate with the locals. Going somewhere alone though is like releasing a spring, which makes you unbelievable friendly and eager to meet new people. Start a conversation with that awesome waitress or communicate with that nice old granny!

Consider these convincing reasons for traveling alone and give this experience a try!

Best Rooftop Restaurants in the World http://tripess.com/best-rooftop-restaurants-in-the-world/ http://tripess.com/best-rooftop-restaurants-in-the-world/#respond Fri, 23 Jun 2017 07:33:58 +0000 http://tripess.com/?p=237 Sky Bar: Bangkok, Thailand

Perhaps this is the most celebrated rooftop bars in the world. Whoever goes to this city (which you can do for not very much thanks to loads of cheap direct flights to Bangkok), has to visit the Sky Bar in Sirocco restaurant once. Located on the 63rd floor, this is the world’s highest al fresco restaurant. It offers 360-degree views of the city.

Aer, Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai, India

Aamchi Mumbai too has a state-of-the-art restaurant at par with the skyscraping rooftop restaurant of the rest of the world. Standing tall at the 34th floor, this highest rooftop bar of Mumbai covers the entire roof of the Four Seasons Hotel of Mumbai. Extremely chic and sleek in its décor, it will make you skip a heartbeat on the first look. The glass walls offer an unhindered view of the Romantic Mumbai cityscape and the sea.

Dinner in the sky

Dinner in the sky

Er..what if we drop our plates?

Imagine being suspended at a height of 50 metres, your legs dangling in the air, your hair blowing in the breeze. And in front of you is well-laid out seven-course meal. Dinner in the sky offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, meetings, evening cocktails in the sky. The meals are prepared on the ground, the trays loaded with food, the guests strapped onto the roller-coaster-like dining chairs, and the entire setup is taken to the skies via a crane. The service is available in many countries. We wonder if this is exactly what they mean by cloud nine.

 360, Istanbul, Turkey

Turkey is the land where you breathe culture, smell spices, marvel at the mosque architecture. The city is full of rooftop restaurants giving you an overwhelming view of its quiet skyline. But the one that stands out is the award-winning hotel 360. Stylish, sleek and sensuous is what defines 360. Overlooking the city, this rooftop bar is a lounge and a restaurant. As the evening warms up, so does the dance floor. The hotel is known for its floor-to-ceiling windows and huge spaces.
